Many agencies get their business from word of mouth. However, you should search and see who is around you, so you can interview different agencies to see who really fits with what you’re looking for.

Now, sometimes, we’re not sure what we’re looking for. Well, because, simply, you don’t know what you don’t know! If you’ve never worked with an agency before, you’re probably really nervous because it’s hard to tell what to expect! The only way to know, is to ask!

In the meantime, consider these thoughts to direct your conversation with a potential agency.

Overlooked Consideration #1: You will still need to be involved.

Many brands and businesses think that hiring an agency means you can drive without your hands on the wheel. However, that’s not always the case.

So, how involved will you need to be?

Many agencies have the capability to autonomously work on your marketing. They will create, implement and manage your plans. However, some agencies require your authorization and approvals which can sometimes be tedious and you’ll have to have someone assigned to approve that content/update.

TIP: Decide why an agency is right for you. If the reason is time, then consider giving them full autonomy. You will need to buffer in some ‘training’ time, so the agency can get to know your voice, brand, etc. Plan for this to be ironed out in the first 2 months. But always keep your monthly meeting for updates and new implementations.

Overlooked Consideration #2: You need a direct point of contact.

Many agencies have lots of departments and all you to call their ‘main line’. However, you need to know that you’ll have a dedicated account manager that can receive, respond, acknowledge and escalate your requests. This will ensure that you can implement quickly, as well as brainstorm and create with someone that is trained and familiar with your account.

TIP: Ask if you’ll have a dedicated account manager, and if you’ll be able to have a direct line to reach them.

Overlooked Consideration #3: Choose the agency that can say no.

You don’t need an agency that can do everything. The fact is, every agency has a strong point. If you want someone to handle your Pay Per Click Campaigns, find the agency that specializes in that.

You want to find people that are trained, staying up to date with new implementations, and who are the experts. It’s hard to be an expert in many fields.

If a marketing agency says they can do everything; they are probably doing everything ‘okay’.

TIP: Decide if you need to have everything taken care of, or if you need a few things done with excellence. Then, make your decision.

Deciding on an agency can be a stressful time. You really need to vibe with the people who will be handling your message, your business, your lead generation. It’s an important decision that shouldn’t be taken lightly.

Consider your agency an extension of your team. Treat them with respect, give them guidance, and watch your business flourish!
